Rodeo 101: Bareback Riding: Cowboys ride bareback on the horse and use a rigging, which looks like a heavy piece of leather with a suitcase handle. The cowboys ride one-handed and cannot touch themselves or the horse with their free hand. The mark-out rule is in effect. This means the bronc rider must have the rowels of both spurs in front of the break of the bronc's shoulders on its first move out of the chute. The rider's feet must still be in this position when the bronc's front feet hit the ground for the first time. Both the riders and the horses are judged. Cowboys are judged on their control, spurring technique, how much his toes remain turned out while he is spurring and his ability to adapt to whatever happens during the ride. The horses are judged on their power, speed, and agility. The cowboy must ride for eight seconds. Interested in seeing this action in person? Rodeo 101- Breakaway Roping: The contestant has a rope with a flag (or bandanna) at its end tied to her saddle horn by a nylon string. Upon entering the “box” and backing into position, the roper nods for the release of her calf. If she doesn’t break the barrier and catches her calf, the roper will bring her horse to a stop, causing the rope to break away from the saddle horn. This break away action exposes the flag, alerting the judge to stop the clock.
